Vanstone distribution in the 1841 census

1841 census

The 1841 census contained limited information. For example it did not specify relationships between individals at a single address, ages of adults were rounded up to the nearest 5, and the place of birth is not given.

This map attempts to make some sense of the 1841 information, showing all the parishes where Vanstones lived, based on both individuals and on families. I think that the distribution of families is more reliable in illustrating the concentration of the clan, which is why I have distinguished between single older indivuals, living possibly in what had once been a family home, and young single Vanstones who were probably away from home, working as servants or labourers and who had not yet settled anywhere.

The parishes with the greatest concentration of Vanstone families in 1841 are Hatherleigh and Woolfardisworthy.
